I'm a multi-platform journalist with international experience and an itch to experiment. I’m fascinated by the way things fit together and love a good story.
I report, write and edit. I get video, audio, still photos and produce multimedia.
I have a talent for dissecting large organizations: Businesses. Non-profits. Web sites. Bureaucracy. Anything with people and moving parts. I like to see how it works and explain it in a way that makes sense.
I've worked at newspapers, blogged, founded a local news and community web site. I'm interested in finding new ways to get and share information and expand news organizations' offerings.
Multimedia storytelling, writing, editing, content development
Areas: China, US and California education policy, politics, community journalism

When I moved to Dalian in 2006, I had to hunt for useful information in a mix of local blogs, forums and rudimentary government websites. Most of what I learned came from word of mouth.
DalianDalian is an effort to bring together many disparate pieces of information about Dalian, a city in Northeast China with a growing expat population and a thriving tech sector.
The site relies on existing channels to let users contribute without having to learn a new system. Local bloggers can import posts with RSS; photographers push pictures to the site through Flickr. The site's open source CMS (Drupal) organizes the information automatically, allowing people to share information in useful and intelligent ways.
I helped found the site with Alex Bowman (an economist and web developer) and Rick Martin (a tech writer and trainer), who also lived in the city.
